How Insurance Agents Can Use Google’s NotebookLM to Work Smarter (with Examples)

Written by Matt Smith | February 12, 2025

Imagine having a research assistant that can quickly analyze documents, answer questions, and generate content—that’s Google’s NotebookLM. This tool helps insurance agents efficiently understand client policies, research regulations, and organize information to better serve clients while saving time.

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM transforms your notes, documents, and research into an interactive knowledge base. You can provide a variety of source materials, including PDFs, Google Docs, text files, and even YouTube videos. NotebookLM uses AI to understand the content, allowing you to ask questions, summarize key points, and generate new content based on the materials you provide.

Why it’s useful

In a nutshell, NotebookLM helps you:

  • Save Time: Quickly digest large amounts of information and get to the key takeaways.
  • Boost Productivity: Focus on higher-value tasks instead of getting bogged down in research.
  • Enhance Understanding: Gain deeper insights into complex topics by seeing the connections between different pieces of information.
  • Generate Content: Create summaries, reports, blog posts, and other content based on your research.

How Does it Compare?

While other generative AI tools like ChatGPT excel at creating creative text and answering general knowledge questions, NotebookLM is specifically designed to work with your documents. It focuses on helping you understand and utilize the information you already possess, rather than generating content from scratch. Think of it as a specialized tool for research and knowledge management.

Standout Features:

  • Source-Based Answers: NotebookLM provides answers that are based on your specific documents, which gives you confidence in the information. It even cites the sources, making it easy for you to verify the information.
  • Interactive Q&A: You can engage in a conversation with your documents, ask questions, and receive instant answers.
  • Content Generation: NotebookLM can create summaries, outlines, and even generate creative content based on your source material.
This video provides a good overview of how you can use NotebookLM for business.

In this example, I used NotebookLM to provide key talking points and a briefing doc using a 50-page report on the Texas P&C Marketplace.

How Insurance Agents Can Use NotebookLM:

Here are some practical use-cases:

  • Policy Analysis: Upload complex policy documents and quickly understand the key terms, coverage details, and exclusions. Ask NotebookLM specific questions like, “What are the limitations on flood damage coverage?” and get precise answers based on the policy.
  • Client Research: Compile client information from various sources (CRM, emails, notes) and use NotebookLM to create a comprehensive client profile. This can help you personalize your interactions and identify cross-selling opportunities.
  • Competitive Analysis: Gather information on competitor products and services and use NotebookLM to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This can help you position your offerings more effectively.
  • Staying Up-to-Date: Upload industry news articles, regulatory updates, and training materials. Use NotebookLM to summarize key changes and identify potential impacts on your business. For example, upload new legislation and ask, “How will this impact my clients’ premiums?”
  • Content Creation: Generate blog posts, social media updates, or even personalized emails for clients based on your research. For example, after researching a new type of insurance product, ask NotebookLM to draft a short explanation for clients.
  • Training and Onboarding: Use NotebookLM to create interactive training materials for new agents, making it easier for them to learn about your products and processes.

3 Scenarios Where NotebookLM Can Assist

Example 1:
An insurance agent uploads multiple client testimonials to NotebookLM and inquires, “What are the common themes in these testimonials?” The tool analyzes the text and identifies recurring positive feedback. This information can then be effectively utilized in the agent’s marketing materials to enhance client engagement.

Example 2: An agent uploads a comprehensive 50-page document detailing new insurance regulations. Rather than reading through the entire document, the agent asks NotebookLM, “What are the key changes related to commercial liability insurance?” In response, NotebookLM generates a concise summary, enabling the agent to grasp essential updates quickly and efficiently, thereby saving valuable time.

Example 3: In preparation for an upcoming client meeting, an agent uploads the client’s policy documents and requests, “What are the client’s current coverage limits for property damage?” NotebookLM swiftly provides the necessary information, enhancing the agent’s readiness and efficiency for the meeting.
