Catalyit Team Review

Helping agencies manage technology as an insurance operation—not just an IT department
Updated: August 2026

What we like:

  • Deep insurance-agency specialization: SMART Services has worked with independent agencies for more than 30 years and understands management systems, carrier connectivity, rating tools, downloads, and other technology that a general-purpose IT provider may need time to learn.
  • Covers more than everyday IT support: Managed infrastructure, Microsoft 365, cloud services, cybersecurity, compliance, vendor management, and voice can be coordinated through one technology relationship.
  • Vendor management can remove a real agency headache: SMART Services can help manage the technology relationships surrounding the agency rather than requiring agency leadership to troubleshoot every issue between software, telecom, network, and other providers.
  • Cybersecurity and compliance are part of the operating model: Security controls, monitoring, documentation, continuity planning, and employee considerations are treated as part of managing agency technology rather than as a separate add-on conversation.
  • Automation and AI guidance is grounded in agency workflows: SMART Services now helps agencies identify workflow opportunities, evaluate AI use cases, establish governance, and implement technology rather than simply recommending another tool.

Things to consider:

  • The broad service model may be more than some agencies need. Organizations looking only for occasional desktop support or a single cybersecurity service should compare that need with SMART Services' broader managed-technology approach.
  • Agencies should define the scope carefully. IT support, cybersecurity, compliance, voice, vendor management, workflow automation, and AI consulting are different responsibilities. Leadership should understand exactly what is included and who owns each area.
  • A managed provider doesn't eliminate internal technology ownership. Someone at the agency still needs to set priorities, approve changes, communicate business needs, and hold technology partners accountable.
  • AI and automation should follow process decisions. Agencies should avoid automating inefficient workflows simply because implementation support is available.

Summary

Technology inside an independent agency doesn't operate in isolation. The AMS depends on connectivity. Employees need secure access to Microsoft 365 and agency applications. Carrier portals need to work. Phone systems matter to client service. Cybersecurity affects compliance. And when something breaks, several vendors may point at one another before anyone takes responsibility.

SMART Services is designed to manage that environment with an insurance-agency perspective. Its services span managed IT, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity and compliance, vendor management, voice, workflow automation, and AI strategy and implementation.

Why should agencies care? A general-purpose IT provider may be perfectly capable of managing computers and networks but still know very little about how an independent insurance agency actually operates. Understanding AMS workflows, carrier systems, rating tools, downloads, remote employees, and insurance-specific security requirements can shorten the distance between “technology problem” and “business problem.”

What stood out during our review is the breadth of responsibility SMART Services is willing to take around the agency's technology environment. The company isn't simply maintaining infrastructure. It is increasingly positioning itself as the technology partner helping leadership plan, operate, secure, and improve that environment over time.

Key Features:

  • Managed IT and cloud infrastructure
  • Microsoft 365 management and support
  • Cybersecurity and compliance support
  • U.S.-based help desk
  • Technology vendor management
  • Integrated voice services
  • Workflow and process automation
  • AI strategy, governance, training, and implementation

Best fit for:

  • Independent agencies without a full internal IT department
  • Agencies with roughly 10–200 users that need ongoing IT, security, and compliance support
  • Multi-location, remote, or hybrid agencies needing a more standardized technology environment
  • Agencies frustrated by managing multiple technology vendors and determining who owns each problem
  • Agency leaders wanting practical guidance around automation and AI in addition to traditional IT support

May not be ideal for:

  • Very small agencies needing only occasional break/fix computer support
  • Organizations with mature internal IT, cybersecurity, compliance, automation, and vendor-management teams
  • Agencies looking only for a standalone software product rather than an ongoing technology relationship
  • Organizations unwilling to standardize technology practices or involve an outside provider in broader operational decisions

Deeper Dive

The Problem Being Solved: Many independent agencies don't need—or can't justify—building a complete internal IT department.

They still have most of the responsibilities of one.

Employees need computers, applications, secure access, email, phones, backups, networks, cybersecurity controls, vendor support, and help when something stops working. Leadership also has to make decisions about upgrades, security, compliance, remote work, automation, and increasingly AI.

The challenge becomes more complicated because insurance agencies use specialized technology.

An AMS problem may actually involve a network, carrier, integration, workstation, browser, or vendor issue. An employee experiencing the problem usually doesn't care which company is responsible. They need someone to get it resolved.

SMART Services brings those responsibilities together through an insurance-focused managed-services model.

That specialization is important. The provider already understands the basic technology environment instead of requiring the agency to continually explain why a carrier download, comparative rater, or management-system workflow matters.

Why It Matters to Agencies: Technology downtime is expensive, but so is technology distraction.

An agency principal shouldn't have to become the person coordinating between the internet provider, AMS vendor, phone company, Microsoft environment, security vendor, and local computer technician every time an issue crosses system boundaries.

Vendor management is therefore more meaningful than it may initially sound.

We also see value in connecting cybersecurity and compliance with everyday IT decisions. Security isn't a separate product installed after the network is built. Employee access, Microsoft configuration, remote work, backups, documentation, devices, and business continuity all affect the agency's risk.

SMART Services' current approach also recognizes that the technology conversation is changing. Agencies are evaluating automation and AI while simultaneously worrying about security, governance, data, and employee adoption.

Having a technology partner that understands both the underlying environment and the agency workflow can help leadership make those decisions in context rather than buying tools independently.

What Stood Out to Us: What stood out during our review is SMART Services' evolution from an insurance-focused managed IT provider toward a broader technology-operations partner.

Its current service model includes a Modern IT Workplace, Cybersecurity & Compliance, AI Strategy & Implementation, Workflow & Process Automation, and Integrated Voice Services.

We like the workflow emphasis. SMART Services can evaluate agency processes and develop an automation roadmap rather than starting with a specific technology and looking for somewhere to use it.

We see the same value in its approach to AI. The company includes governance, training, and an agency AI foundation alongside implementation. We would still encourage agencies to begin with the business problem rather than the technology, but having implementation and infrastructure expertise together can reduce the number of parties involved.

The insurance focus remains the most important differentiator. Plenty of managed service providers can support Microsoft 365, networks, endpoints, and phones. SMART Services has spent decades working inside the independent insurance environment.

For us, that's the distinction: SMART Services isn't just managing the agency's computers. It is trying to manage the technology environment around how an insurance agency actually works.

Final Thoughts

We came away seeing SMART Services' insurance specialization as the most important part of the offering. Managed IT and cybersecurity are crowded categories, but independent agencies operate specialized systems and workflows that general-purpose technology providers may not understand immediately.

We also like the broader direction. Vendor management, cybersecurity, compliance, voice, workflow automation, and practical AI guidance acknowledge that an agency's technology environment is no longer just servers, computers, and a help desk. Those decisions increasingly overlap with operations and business strategy.

For an agency principal, SMART Services is worth further evaluation if too much technology responsibility currently falls on agency leadership—or if several unrelated vendors are managing pieces of an environment no one fully owns. We would inventory who currently manages your infrastructure, employee support, Microsoft environment, cybersecurity, compliance technology, phones, vendors, automation, and technology planning. If the answer is fragmented or frequently lands back on the agency principal, SMART Services' integrated, insurance-focused model deserves a closer look.
