Office Space Day: Bill Lumbergh’s Journey to 2025
February 19 marks the 26th anniversary of Office Space, the cult classic that perfectly captured the absurdity of corporate life in the late '90s. From TPS reports to red staplers, this movie gave us a comedic yet painfully relatable look at the modern workplace. But what if Office Space characters found themselves in 2025? Would they adapt, or would they still be trying to avoid meetings?
In this special Office Space Day blog, we explore how much work and technology have changed—or stayed the same—through the eyes of the most iconic boss in cinematic history: Bill Lumbergh, the master micromanager.
Bill Lumbergh’s Journey to 2025
Mmm yeah… so, somehow, I woke up in 2025, and I gotta say, things are looking a little different around here. The cubicles? Not as soul-crushing as before. The coffee? Well, it’s fancier, but still, nobody’s using the cover sheets on their reports. We’re gonna have to go ahead and talk about that…
Printers: Still Hanging On
So, I was really expecting printers to be a thing of the past, but nope—they’re still here. And people still seem to have a problem with them. The connectivity issues? Mmm, yeah, that’s a bit of a problem, but at least I don’t have to listen to people complain about paper jams as much. That said, I do expect everyone to go ahead and print those monthly reports on time, okay? Great.
Fax Machines? No TPS Cover Sheets?
I walked around the office, and you know what I didn’t see? A single fax machine. That’s just not gonna work for me. Back in the day, faxing was a vital part of communication, and now people just sign things digitally? Seems a little too efficient if you ask me. And while we’re at it, what happened to TPS reports? Nobody’s using them anymore? That’s gonna be a problem…
Meetings Still Exist, Thank Goodness
I was worried that meetings would be a thing of the past, but thankfully, people are still spending valuable work hours in them. The only problem? They’re on Zoom now, and let me tell you—mmm, yeah—I don’t love how people mute themselves and pretend they’re listening. Back in my day, if you were going to ignore me, you at least had to do it in person.
Floppy Disks? Not Even a Save Icon Anymore
I went to save a file the other day and noticed something was off. No floppy disk icon? Mmm, yeah, that’s not great. Turns out, people don’t even use flash drives anymore. Everything’s in the “cloud.” Now, I don’t know about you, but storing everything in the sky doesn’t sound very secure. I think I’ll go ahead and request we bring those floppy disks back, okay? Yeah… great.
Internet: From Dial-Up to Way Too Fast
So, I remember the days of dial-up—real quality internet speeds at 56 Kbps. Now? People are streaming 4K video while working, and offices have speeds of 200 Mbps or higher. That’s a lot of bandwidth that could be used for sending TPS reports, but instead, I see people watching YouTube. Mmm yeah, we’re gonna need to go ahead and block that site.
What’s Still the Same?
Some things haven’t changed, thankfully. Middle management still exists, and I’m still here making sure people stay on task. People are still finding ways to look busy while doing the bare minimum, and yes—there’s still that one guy in the office who won’t give up his favorite desk item. Milton, I hope you’re doing well, buddy.
So, on this Office Space Day, let’s all take a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come—just don’t forget to submit those reports. And if you could go ahead and come in on Saturday, that’d be great. Mmm, yeah…
