RIP: Windows 8.1 Support is Ending

I hope that when you read this headline, you wonder “Who still uses Windows 8.1?” rather than going into full panic mode.

I do realize that today’s TechTip may not apply to many of you, however, I would encourage you (or your IT person) to double-check and ensure you don’t have any computers connected to your network still using Windows 8.1.

Be sure to check the closets and those abandoned work cubicles for stray computers.

This end-of-life support means there will no longer be any security updates for this version of Windows. A rogue computer could compromise your entire network environment.

For those of you that are interested, below are the details of this announcement from Microsoft.

  • Support for Windows 8 ended on January 12, 2016, and support for Windows 8.1 will end on January 10, 2023.
  • The Microsoft 365 Apps are no longer supported on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 after they have reached their end-of-support dates. To avoid performance and reliability issues, we recommend that you move to a newer version of Windows.
